Pyramidiots: A Brief, But Necessary, Digression
In 1968, the book Chariots of the Gods? was published to worldwide attention. Written by the Swiss hotelier Erich von Däniken (b. 1935), it claimed that many of the world’s most famous ancient monuments—including the Egyptian pyramids—were built by ancient astronauts, i.e., aliens. He claimed that the event in the first chapter of the Book of Ezekiel (which we discussed previously) should be taken literally as a description of a flying saucer, etc. In fact, much of what we have been discussing in this volume could be understood as an attempt to revisit that argument from a more mature and reasoned perspective, one based on a deeper reading of the relevant texts from these ancient cultures rather than an attempt to “decode” (arbitrarily) their architectural forms and technology. We feel that some of the religious experiences as documented by these civilizations are attempts to describe the Phenomenon, but perhaps not in the way von Däniken understood. Nevertheless, his publications on the subject inspired an entire industry of “ancient astronaut theorists” and an enormous speculative literature that often plays fast and loose with the data.
This type of speculation has led to many outrageous claims, such as those by William Dudley Pelley—the leader of a Nazi organization in the United States in the 1930s called the Silver Legion and usually referred to as the Silver Shirts—who wrote that the dimensions of the Great Pyramid could be used as a kind of calculating device for predicting the future. Pelley was a famous believer in UFOs and flying saucers and when he was released from federal prison after the end of World War II he began his own saucer cult (as we will see in the next book). Based on the work of British Israelite David Davidson (who was a member of the Silver Legion), Pelley performed his own pyramid calculations and announced that the Jews would be destroyed on September 17, 2001: a prediction that seems a little startling today when we remember the attacks that took place a week earlier, on September 11, 2001. Indeed, Erich von Däniken’s editor on Chariots of the Gods? was Wilhelm Utermann, a well-known Nazi author and editor who produced dozens of Nazi-themed publications during World War II under the NSDAP imprimatur and worked as well on the staff of the Völkischer Beobachter: the official Nazi Party newspaper. It cannot be denied that the lure of an extraterrestrial hypothesis is linked—in some circles—to ideas of racial superiority and the legends concerning secret Masters lurking in hidden cities. This has led to some declaring a willingness to cooperate with these Masters—whether purely terrestrial “secret chiefs” or largely incorporeal space aliens—in their perceived mission of dominating the planet and “purifying” it of unsatisfactory genetic material. (We will explore this phenomenon in more depth in the third book of this series.)
Mainstream Egyptologists look with scorn on people like von Däniken and Pelley, people they call “pyramidiots”: those who speculate about the real purpose behind the
